When people are coming over for dinner, as important as what you're going to serve is what you're going to serve it on. Follow my easy table setting tips and you've got the mood ready for a party.

- Go for a sense of occasion. Use a tablecloth, it feels more special. White is classic and clean, but navy is more dramatic.

- Coloured glasses and plates are more fun than plain. Anthropologie does a great selection - it just all feels a bit more like a party.

- Create a surreal setting. Something a bit glamorous an unexpected will instantly set an exciting tone. It doesn't have to be difficult - B&Q sell mirrored tiles which can be lined along the centre of the table with tea lights on top. Instant art deco glow.

- Tea light holders are your best friend. Dot them everywhere. Rockett St George sell a particularly good selection - their level of lighting is just right for a warm, friendly glow.

- Go over the top. A central display of contorted hazel wood in a tall vase in the middle, with mini disco balls hanging off the branches will be brilliantly bonkers.

- Remember about eyelines. Visual centrepieces can sometime block conversation. Be prepared to moved them off the table when people sit down, or choose long, thin candlesticks that guests can easily see around.
